Environmental Impact
Here at 'The Den' we are always conscious of our impact on the environment and doing our bit towards protecting our beautiful surroundings.
Trees
A third of the field is taken by 'Linghowe Plantation', a generations old established woodland area. There are a mixture of trees including oak, ash and our scots pines which are the tallest trees that you see. These trees not only provide welcome shade in summer and shelter in winter, but they also improve air quality and provide habitats for native birds and insects. We have made sure to continue planting younger trees so that this area continues for future generations.
Bees
Each year we have set aside a strip of land surrounding the dog field, as well as a strip along the drive side to plant as wildflower. The flowers bloom throughout spring and early summer creating a rich source of food for bees and butterflies. You will see a range of colourful flowers including cornflowers and poppies.
Clover
We have sown clover amongst the grass in the field which is a natural way to keep the grass rich and reduce the need to add artificial fertilisers. Bees love the clover too!
Donations
We donate a percentage of every single appointment booked to go towards projects which seek to remove carbon. We are proud to have contributed towards some fantastic worldwide projects which have made a real difference!
Upcycling
Some of the features that you seen in the field have been repurposed to reduce the need to buy new. For example, the bench in the middle of the woodland is made from a tree which we sadly had to fell before opening as our tree surgeon advised it was diseased. The pirate ship was from a local nursery and had previously been loved for many years by children aged 0-4 in a local village. Transporting it here was quite the task!
Milk Bottles!
Much of our play equipment including the dog walk, a-frame, weaves, cube system and also our picnic benches are made from recycled milk bottles. We are proud to say that so far the equipment we have purchased has stopped a grand total of 24,708 milk bottles from going into landfill!
